Areas of Practice

International Estate Planning and Estate Settlement

We have been counseling a trust bank engaging in trust and estate businesses for high net worth individuals for over 30 years. We also routinely advise individual clients concerning their wills and other elements of their estate plans, with the purpose of avoiding complications during the settlement of the inheritance. In this regard we work closely with our international network of attorneys in various other jurisdictions.
We offer advice on preparation of wills: (1)for non-Japanese citizens who reside in Japan; (2) for non-Japanese citizens who reside outside Japan but have assets or family members in Japan; and (3) for Japanese citizens living in the U.S. and other counties. We also contribute to drafting foreign estate planning documents prepared by foreign attorneys to minimize Japanese inheritance taxes. In other words, our substantial experience enables us to provide total support to clients regarding (i) Japanese will drafting and (ii) advising on foreign estate planning documents to minimize the global taxation including the Japanese inheritance tax. When needed, international matters are handled in cooperation with our wide international network of prominent lawyers specialized in trust and estate law.
Regarding the estate settlement, we provide assistance: (1) for non-residents in Japan who receive assets in Japan and (2) for Japanese who receive assets located outside Japan. We also handle inheritance disputes such as estate division mediation at a family court when the decedent dies intestate and lawsuits regarding forced heirship at district courts.
